SWOT analysis

A simple framework for assessing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats to guide strategy.

SWOT analysis is a long-standing strategic framework that organises an assessment of a business into four quadrants: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Its appeal is its simplicity, giving teams a shared structure for an honest conversation about where they stand.

The four elements split into two pairs:

A SWOT is only as good as the evidence behind it. The common failure is filling the boxes with optimistic assumptions rather than grounded facts, which produces a comforting picture that misleads. Strong analyses tie each entry to specific data, including how you genuinely compare to competitors.

SWOT is most useful as a starting point rather than a conclusion. Once the quadrants are filled, the work is deciding which strengths to press, which weaknesses to fix, which opportunities to chase and which threats to neutralise.
