Category creation

Defining and popularising a new market category that a company is positioned to lead.

Category creation is the strategy of defining a new market category and educating the market on why it matters, so the company that named it becomes the default leader. It is high-risk and slow, but when it works the category creator sets the terms everyone else competes on.

Creating a category is intensely competitive even though it looks like education. Rivals will try to redefine the category, claim the language, or position themselves as the better choice within it.

RivalDesk tracks how competitors adopt and reframe category language, so you can tell when your category narrative is being contested.
